In the natural order of life, although the earth's atmosphere remains fairly consistent, the air is continually being produced and used by various forms of life and natural processes.

Only a very small part of the earth's atmosphere is carbon dioxide (CO2) - about 0.04%. Yet without CO2, plants, animal life and all human activity would cease to exist.

The pre-industrial CO2 levels was about 280 parts per million around the year 1800.
