Research suggests, that if the conditions are 'right', the conveyer can be stopped in just 20 years. However, it will take hundreds of years before the conveyer is able to start again.

Evidence has been found, which proves that the conveyer has shut down and started a number of times in the past, so it can happen again if the Greenland icecap melts.
