Kyoto - A Political success?

The problem with Kyoto
1) The Kyoto Protocol does not go far enough. By 2012 CO2 levels are expected to grow with 38%. Kyoto reduces this to 31%
2) The USA - the worlds biggest CO2 polluter - withdrew support for Kyoto in March 2001
3) Japan, Canada, Russia and most EU countries are all unlikely to meet their Kyoto target.
4) The aviation industry is not included in the agreement.
5) The Protocol only remains in effect until 2012. No-one knows what replaces it.
6) India and China are not part of the current agreement
- Kyoto - A success?
Not really. While the politicians may be proud of their work, environmental groups have criticised the Kyoto protocol for a number of reasons. The CO2 level has now reached 378 PPM, but the world continues to be without an effective political solution to global warming.
The G8 summit in Glenneagles in 2005 was hailed as a historical opportunity for the G8 to make progress on global warming together with China and India, who had also been invited to the meeting.
Unfortunately no new agreement was reached as the USA yet again blocked a deal by refusing to accept scientific evidence and suggesting that global warming was not caused by human activity.
Lack of progress?
