The latest figures show that UK households recycle about 23% of their waste. 10 years ago, we recycled only 10% so a huge increase, but well below Europe's leaders - Norway recycles 68%, Holland 64% and Germany 57%.
Green waste
Buy milk and juice in bottles from your local milkman, and avoid both plastic and paper based waste.
All plastics can be recycled, but most local councils only collect type 1 and 2. Drinks and milk bottles fall into this category. Look for the Recycle mark (also known as the 'Mobius Loop') and check what your local council will accept.

All types of metal can be recycled. Anything from cans to bicycle frames are accepted by the local recycle centre.
All types of glass jars, bottles and containers can be recycled at the local recycle centre.
Newspaper, phonebooks, paper packaging, cardboard boxes etc. can be recycled.
Most recycle centres now accept green garden waste, which is composted and sold back to happy garden owners
