From the real world
In June 2003 I moved from Slough to Fair Oak in Hampshire. I now live 3 miles from my work. After the move, my weekly petrol bill fell from £85 to just £15.
Annual saving: ~£2,300

In July 2005 I bought a bike. I ride to work most days and take the buss when it rains. My weekly travel bill has now fallen to just over £3 per week for my buss ticket.
Annual saving: ~£550

Sell the second car and save.
If moving, move close to work or school
Walk your kids to school
Use public transport. Bus and train use less fuel per person than a car.
The average family spends ~15% of their annual income on their car. The money goes to petrol, insurance, tax and minor repairs. The average monthly cost is £450, which is more expensive than the average mortgage. By looking at green transport options, significant savings can therefore be achieved by most households.
