If approved by the EU, the project is expected to be completed in about 5 years and provide clean, renewable energy for decades to come. Airtricity's spokeman said on Friday: 'The wind farm will be capable of producing 10,000MW and provide electricity to an estimated 6 million homes and businesses.'

Airtricity is expected to produce a business plan at the end of the year. However, changes to the EU and Europe-wide electricity market will be required before the plans can go ahead. Airtriciy's chief executive said: 'This project needs some proper leadership and some significant rules changes in Europe to happen.'
