EU and China announces new nZEC project
At the EU-China summit that concluded on the 5th September 2005, a proposal for a joint project on Near Zero Emission Coal (nZEC) was revealed. The project is driven by the fact that China's Carbon Dioxide emissions are set to double by 2030. The aim is to prove the general technology of capturing and storing carbon, and have a power stations utilising the new technology in place by 2020

UK environment Secretary Margaret Beckett said: "I am pleased that we have agreed to work with China to develop and demonstrate carbon capture and storage technologies to enable power to be generated from near-zero emission coal."

The UK is supporting the nZEC project with an initial investment of £3.51 million. The funds will be used to support a feasibility study of existing technologies. Both capture technologies and the ability to store the captured carbon under ground will be researched.
