While Europeans may think nothing of sub-zero temperatures, most South Asians are used to intense summer heat, but are unable to cope with cold conditions because most accommodation lack heating and many are too poor to afford warm clothes or blankets for protection.
The worst affected countries are:
Japan - At least 70 dead and 1000 injured due to record snowfall
China - 100.000 people have been evacuated because of worst winter weather in last 20 years
India - At least 144 dead as temperatures dip to the lowest recorded in the last 70 years and the second lowest ever recorded.
Pakistan - Death toll has reached 47, but fears are growing for the earthquake survivors who are still living in the mountains without adequate protection and food.
Bangladesh - More than 39 people have died in just a week of cold weather, despite not even reaching freezing.
