The argument is based on his detailed scientific understanding of the planet and how many complicated control mechanisms, if left undisturbed by human activity, will work together to keep the planet habitable and in an equilibrium.

It is these global mechanisms (global dimming, gulf stream slowdown, albedo effect, melting of the polar ice caps and many more), which James Loveluck believes have been disturbed to such a degree that we are unable to control them and stop climate change from running wild.

Based on his assessment, we need to accept that time is running out a lot faster than anyone is expecting and change the approach quickly. He suggests that the UK and all other nations should start to plan for the future and a worst case scenario. This would mean 'shutting down' and preparing the nation to feed itself and sustain civilisation for as long as possible.

Mr. Lovelock predicts that billions will die before the turn of the next century and that the few breading pairs of humans will survive in the north where the climate will continue to be hospitable enough to sustain human life.
James Lovelock, inventor and world famous environmental scientist best known for his Gaia theory about the living earth, has with his latest comments given the world a stark warning: "We are past the point of no return!"

Mr. Lovelock's vision of the earth's future, is one where we are unable to control climate change and where temperature rises will accelerate and ultimately lead to the destruction of our society as we know it.
