Rather than purchase electricity from the national grid, is it far more effective for domestic users to generate their own heat and power.
This alternative to a centralised production and distribution system is also known as 'Microgeneration', which the UK Government is keen to promote through financial incentives because it provides a simple and effective way of reducing domestic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Ceres Power plc
Ceres Power plc is a world leader in the development and commercialisation of Domestic fuel cell technology. Their natural gas fuel cell CHP unit is set to become the de facto standard in UK domestic houses in years to come.
New Fuel Cell Products
Ceres Power have developed a Fuel Cell CHP unit, which is a domestic 'mini' power station.
The CHP unit runs on natural gas and can generate power and electricity.
The electricity is generated as a by-product when the natural gas is converted into energy in the fuel cell.
Domestic users is expected to utilise the same amount of natural gas, but in effect have their electricity generated for FREE.
The FREE electricity is expected to save the average household between £350-£400 per year, and lead to an annual reduction per household of about 0.7-1.1 tons of carbon dioxide
It is expected that the CHP will be equivalent in purchase price to a conventional boiler.
The UK Government already support this type of unit as they benefit from 5 per cent VAT.
