Fusion - the Pros & Cons
As with any new technology, powerful arguments are put forward for and against nuclear fusion as we move forward in our quest to harness the power of the sun and stars.

Fusion - The Pros

  • A clean energy source, that does not produce any greenhouse gases
  • Unlimited supply of fusion fuel - Deuterium and Tritium can be easily produced
  • Fusion does not involve a chain reaction (as with nuclear power), making it very safe
  • Only the rector core will be left radioactive, but only for about 100 years
Fusion - The Cons
  • We may never be able to make fusion technology work
  • There are fears that the energy required to make the reactor work will be greater than the energy the fusion reactor can produce!
  • ITER is likely to cost in excess of £7bn. Money that could be utilised on existing 'green' technologies to help fight global warming.
  • Environment organisations fear that the focus on fusion will detract attention away from dealing effectively with global warming here and now.
