| What is autoclaving? | |
| Autoclaving is a high temperature steam process used to treat municipal solid waste (MSW). At the centre of the autoclaving process is the autoclave itself, a rotating steel cylinder, into which MSW (glass, cans, paper, food waste, plastic, textiles) is loaded before high temperature steam is pumped into the autoclave. After about 45 minutes, the sanitised MSW is removed from the autoclave and sorted. In addition to glass, metal and plastics, the process results in the production of fibre that contains the majority of the solid organic matter derived from plant and food wastes within the MSW. The fibre can be used as bio-fuel or in a variety of construction products, cardboard or even composted. |
