Autoclaving - The Pros & Cons
Overlooked by local Government as an alternative to current carbon intensive municipal recycling schemes, a critical report by Mr. J. Cuffe highlights the many financial and environmental benefits of the autoclaving technology.
Financial benefits
Technology - CapEx - OpEx per ton MSW |
Gasification - >£54M - £69
Incineration - >£49M - £66
Autoclaving - £10M+ - £32
Costs less than kerbside recycling schemes.

Major household benefit
Autoclaving removes the need for households to separate everyday waste into glass, metal, paper, organic and so on. |
Environmental benefits
The environmental benefits are many. The most significant are listed in the following.
- Reduces the overall volume of household waste with 60% or more.
- Allows recycling of around 80% of the unsorted municipal waste input.
- Reduces the overall volume of waste dumped in a landfill site by 80+%.
- A low-energy and low-carbon solution.
- No incineration, merely steam, which is condensed and recycled in each cycle.
Drawbacks
- Overlooked by local councils as an environmentally sound alternative to current high-carbon and high cost kerbside collection schemes.
- Cannot take bulky household waste at present, though if shredded down this becomes possible.
