Letter to the Editor - Government should consider tax on CO2
Press Releases
Letters to the Editor
16th June 2006

Sir,

The UK don’t recycle enough. It has been like this for years. And to make more of us consider what we throw out, the Government this week unveiled a range of ‘green’ taxes to help encourage everyone to recycle more.

Monday Tony Millbank pledged that all “UK central departments and their agencies will be carbon neutral by 2012” and Tony Blair followed up by saying that he wanted the public sector “to take a lead on doing things sustainably”.

If the voluntary approach to recycling does not work, why do the Government continue to think that this is an effective strategy when it comes to reducing CO2 emissions, which has continued to rise under the Labour Government.

Surely the time has come for Tony Blair to stop the ‘we are doing something about global warming’ spin and instead ask his ineffective Government to start to financially encourage everyone to reduce our carbon footprint year on year.
