Carbon-info.org announces new partnership to boost ethical carbon offsetting.

1st November 2006

Hampshire based environmental organisation Carbon-info.org announces new partnership with Wales based Treeflights.com, which specialises in ethical carbon offset planting.

The partnership aims to highlight the benefit of offsetting carbon emissions through tree planting, which is a natural and effective way of absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it long term.

The objective is also to improve the reputation of tree planting in general, as this method of offsetting has been severely damaged by non-ethical offsetting companies, who have attracted a lot of public criticism by claiming that tree planting can make a specific activity carbon neutral.

“We are delighted that we are able to work with Treeflights.com,” said Carbon-info’s chairman Flemming Bermann. “We share a common vision of planting lots of trees, but doing so without suggesting that it will make your trip to New York carbon neutral and reminding individuals that they still need to consider how to reduce their carbon footprint.”

Ru Hartwell, Director of Treeflights.com said: "Planting trees can play a critical part in our fight against global warming. Trees keep our atmosphere healthy and we forget them at our peril."

A variety of local native broadleaved species such as Ash, Oak, Willow and Beach are planted in mixed groups with open glades to encourage a diversity of wildlife. To ensure that the trees grow and thrive to maturity, Treeflights.com plant all saplings within a mulch mat of recycled polythene and to standard organic principles.

The need to preserver the world’s existing forests and planting millions of new trees was highlighted in the Stern report released this week. The report found that deforestation accounts for almost 18% of annual CO2 emissions, and that there is an urgent requirement to protect the last remaining forests from destruction and plant new forests as quickly as possible.
