Carbon-info.org, a Hampshire based environment organisation working to raise public awareness on global warming and climate change, launches the UK’s first National Day of Climate Action on April 14th.

The campaign, promoted under the slogan ‘STEP IT UP 2007‘, plans to mobilise hundreds of local climate actions and events throughout the country aimed at highlighting the urgent need for individual and Government action to help reduce the impact of global warming.

Instead of promoting a single event in London, which is limited to those who live in the capital or are able to travel, the National Day of Climate Action is providing an opportunity for individuals, organisations and businesses alike to get involved in planning a climate action in the local community.

“By promoting a local climate action initiative, we are able to reach the whole country and make an impact far greater than a single localised event,” said Carbon-info.org’s chairman Flemming Bermann.

While America often is condemned for its unwillingness to reduce its carbon emissions and work with the international community, the ‘STEP IT UP 2007’ campaign originates in the USA, where many ordinary Americans are concerned about the impact of climate change.

Over 400 American events are already planned to take place on April 14th, but the American campaign organisers are hoping for an even bigger turnout internationally by linking up with UK campaigners, who are prepared to campaign for change.

Bill McKibben, organiser of the USA campaign said: “This is an invitation to help start a people’s movement - to take one spring day and use it to reshape the future.”

Roy Tindle, of Faith Sustains, a church based project and STEP IT UP campaign partner said, “This is an important chance to share ideas, learn from others and make a difference by what we do. It’s not about hair shirts but about a day of enjoying life and reducing the damage that we are doing to our environment and to others.”

The campaign has already attracted substantial interest from the media, and many organisations and individuals are busy preparing and planning their April 14th climate action.

Carbon-info.org provides help and advice for those who are new to organising an action, need a campaign idea or wants to learn to contact the local press.
