Sir,

With the recent release of the UN’s IPCC report on climate change, there is no longer any place for politicians to hide the fact that they have wasted valuable time arguing over Kyoto, carbon trading schemes and other actions, which have done little to change the dangerous course we are plotting.

We are now officially heading for a 99% destruction of all life on earth - extinction on a scale not seen for hundreds of millions of years - unless we quickly find the political courage to avoid this truly scary worst-case scenario.

May I suggest that the Labour Government take an international lead and demand that the ineffective Kyoto protocol be replaced, and that this happens in a much shorter and more aggressive timeframe – say by December 2008 rather than 2012.

How important four years may prove to be when we at the end of the century look back and take stock of the damage we have caused to our blue planet.
