Press Release - Hampshire welcomes National Day of Climate Action, April 14th.
5th April 2007
Hampshire welcomes a string of planned events in support
of the UK’s first National Day of Climate Action on April 14th, which
is being organised by the county’s local environment organisation
Carbon-info.org.
The campaign, promoted under the slogan ‘STEP
IT UP 2007‘, encourages local climate events throughout the UK aimed
at highlighting the urgent need for Government action on climate change.
Portsmouth
Climate Action Network is organising a fun day for the entire family
at the Havana Club in Southsea with an outdoor market, children’s
events, demonstrations, films, talks, workshops, stalls and lots more.
In the evening a barbeque and late night dance will draw the event
to a close.
In parallel with the Portsmouth event, Carbon-info.org
will distribute free information packs in Winchester town centre.
The aim is to highlight just how urgent global warming action
is and how individuals can get involved by reducing their own carbon
footprint.
Carbon-info.org has also chosen the 14th April to
launch their new on-line petition to stop the ‘green’ grant lottery.
Carbon-info.org‘s
chairman Flemming Bermann explains: “We have been inundated by emails
from home owners, who have been unable to get a grant under the Low
Carbon Buildings Scheme, and they have asked us our help. So we decided
to launch a national petition asking the Government to stop the ‘green’
grant lottery.”
At the Alton Maltings Centre, the local Friends
of the Earth group will show Al Gore’s “An inconvenient truth”. The
organisers are keen to stress that the admission is free and refreshments
will be available throughout the film.
