Letter to the Editor - Misleading Live Earth information
Sir,
In amongst a rather confused Live Earth message on climate change were many misleading statements on energy saving.
One particular statement stands out. An artist interviewed on BBC, who appeared to take a less than serious interest in the matter, suggested that if he switched off his electrical equipment on stand-by, then he would "save 0.002 pence each year."
The fact is that a TV, DVD player and set top box burns over £18 pounds worth of electricity each year in stand-by mode. Airfreshners, the latest must have for those who can not possibly live with odours, costs you £2.30 each year.
This means that the average household, in a recent survey found to contain about 15-20 electrical appliances or gadgets, can save between £35-£50 each year by switching off.
I cannot but feel that a real opportunity has been missed because the Live Earth organisers appear to have focused on the music rather than getting a coherent, positive and factual message across on global warming.
