Letter to the Editor - Was Live Earth really worth it?
Sir,
Having watched BBC's coverage of Live Earth from Wembley, I cannot but feel that those the 24 hours concert may have tried to influence must have been left rather confused and feeling lectured by the concert organisers, who could be accused of double standards.
The majority of those interviewed by Jonathan Ross seemed to know very little about global warming and many spoke about the fate of the planet in an unconcerned and often jokingly manner, which signalled: "Enjoy the music and don't worry."
Those who are still not convinced about the need to take action, must have been jumping up and down shouting "double standard". And with good reason. Carbon-info.org estimate that the carbon footprint for the entire Live Earth concert is 5000 tons of CO2, which does not appear to be the most environmentally friendly way of delivering a 'green' message.
Next year the organisers, who come from rich and pollution nations, could send a more powerful message to the world by NOT organising another concert, because this years attempt to raise awareness did not deliver value for the amount of CO2 generated.
