Letter to Al Gore - 2007 Nobel price winner

Honorable Al Gore

United States of America

Dear Mr. Gore,

Firstly, our groups sincere congratulations on you receiving the 2007 Nobel price. In our view a most fitting reward that provides the global recognition your environmental leadership on climate change truly deserves.

On a slightly different though connected matter. The United States’ initial reluctance to recognise global warming and the current administration’s continuing attempts to pursue its own climate change agenda outside the UN’s climate collaboration framework is holding back any real progress on global warming. This combined with the USA’s significant political, economical and military muscle, which is generating respect, mistrust and fear throughout the world, we find ourselves living in a political landscape where any hope of resolving our planet‘s environmental problems is significantly limited.

There are naturally those world leaders (including my own UK Government) who claim that technology will somehow magically save us all. And while we wait for the technology to deliver, we are all being encouraged to “do your bit” by making largely ineffective voluntary reductions in our CO2 output.

This strategy is bound to fail because Government’s across the planet are happy to let the solution to climate change be dictated by natural market forces. Politicians are sitting back and expecting that by providing financial incentives, the human race will somehow “make it” without anyone having to specify a timetable or developing a coherent plan for how to ensure that the white technology elephant arrives in time and provide a sufficient level of salvation before the atmospheric CO2 levels run amok.

This is not a strategy, but a clear example of how Government’s are failing. The old political view of the world, which is non-planetary but largely narcissistic and based on economical growth at all cost, has lead us into a cul-de-sac where we are doing too little too late to save our planet from destruction.

In short, we find ourselves in a most difficult situation. As briefly outlines in the above, we are politically deadlocked and stuck with old-school politicians , who have neither the will nor courage to save the world.

Our world is a desperate need of new type of leader, who have the vision and courage to develop a new brand of global politics, which is planetary in scope, fosters reconciliation and cooperation on a global scale and which forces the environmental issues to the top of the international agenda until we get the situation under control.

We believe that you are the leader this world is desperately waiting for. And we encourage you to run for President of the United States because we strongly believe that your vision, courage and leadership would be successful in reforming the old political landscape and implementing a new global strategy for dealing with climate change.

We operate on a very small budget, but are pleased to be able to include a cheque, which we want you to have as a small contribution towards your election campaign fund.

With our uttermost respect and admiration.

Yours sincerely,
